What is CLEAR FOCUS One Way Vision™ film made of and how does it work?

CLEAR FOCUS film is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with up to 50% of the film microperforated to achieve the desired image resolution and one-way visibility. The black (non-imaged) side of the film through which people see maximizes its transparency. Lighting is the final ingredient: For optimum effect, lighting on the graphics side must be brighter than on the non-imaged side.

What are some of the benefits of using CLEAR FOCUS perforated vinyl films?

New media space: CLEAR FOCUS film creates new, innovative media space without obstructing the view. It also creates new business and advertising opportunities that are not available with conventional opaque signage.

Security/safety: The film can be used on the windows of emergency, utility and delivery vehicles, banks and other financial institutions, airports - on virtually any glass door or window where visibility is important for safety and security.

Heat and glare control: CLEAR FOCUS film reduces heat and glare from the sun, making it ideal for commercial and residential buildings, retail stores, museums, etc.

What methods can be used to print the films?

Exterior-mount ClassicVue, ImageVue and SuperVue are uncoated and accept wide-format digital imaging (solvent and UV-curable inkjet), thermal transfer, electrostatic transfer and airbrushing.

Exterior-mount JetVue and ImageJetVue are top-coated and thus compatible with aqueous inkjet printing using pigmented and dye-based inks.

Interior-mount SuperVue is designed primarily for screen printing.

Are there any special considerations to keep in mind when printing CLEAR FOCUS films?

Graphics printed on perforated window films tend to look less vibrant than those printed on solid vinyl because up to 50% of the window vinyl is missing due to the perforation process. For tips on creating/modifying artwork specifically for perforated vinyl, visit the Design page.

Given the wide array of inks, printers and other variables involved in printing, we strongly recommend performing a test prior to actual production. This applies to both printing graphics on our perforated window film products and applying an overlaminate to the printed graphics.

For compatibility with specific printers, check our printer compatibility charts for our products.

What's the difference between exterior-mount film and interior-mount film?

Exterior-mount (also called "black/white") film attaches to the outside of the glass. With exterior-mount film, the image is printed in the desired color sequence directly onto the white layer of the film. Vehicle window graphics, e.g., are printed on exterior-mount film.

Interior-mount film, which is clear, attaches to the interior surface of the glass. With interior-mount film, a mirror image must be printed, with the color sequence printed in reverse, followed by the application of a white overall coat and then a black overall coat. Window graphics for retail stores are sometimes printed on interior-mount film to prevent vandalism and to minimize weathering.

How do I know which CLEAR FOCUS film to use?

It depends on several factors, including the printing method (see above), what the graphic will be used for, print volume and desired life span. For short runs, one-offs and proofs, aqueous inkjet printing is commonly used.

The quality and type of inks used will largely determine the quality and durability of the printed image.

Do I need to laminate the window graphics?

It depends on desired life span, as well as whether the graphics will be subjected to weathering, including rain. The main reasons for laminating perforated window graphics are: 1) to protect against UV, weathering, graffiti, etc. and increase the lifespan of the graphics ; 2) to add gloss to enhance the graphic's appearance; and 3) to maintain visibility through the film by preventing the holes from filling with water when it rains. For more information, see Lamination.

Is CLEAR FOCUS film easy to install?

Using a few simple tools and following some basic rules, CLEAR FOCUS window graphics are easy to apply and remove, allowing media to be changed as often as desired. See Installation for details.
